Staying In On New Year's Eve (Without FOMO)

Image via

Ah, New Year's Eve. For some, it's a night to get dressed up and go out on the town. If that's you, I'm kind of jealous you have a reason to wear sequins. But for others (including myself), there's nothing really glamorous about it. Frankly, I'd opt for a casual night in over freezing my buns off in stilettos any day. Between you and me, I've just spent NYE in my PJs watching HGTV marathons of House Hunters the past couple years. A clear sign I need to get out more.

The point is, I feel like there's sometimes a lot of pressure and hype around what your plans are for NYE when there really shouldn't be. I'd much rather prefer a low-key night (with maybe a few more decorations and sparkle than any other night, just because!) spent with close friends and family, reminiscing about this past year and looking forward to ringing in the new one ahead.

So, if you're still on the fence, here's a few last minute ideas you can do while staying in this NYE that'll make everyone else rethink their plans for next year.

6 Tips for Creating Work/Life Balance
(Trust Me, You Can Do It!)

Image via

With the new year approaching, I'm getting ready to dive into it with a fresh start. An important resolution for me is practicing work/life balance. Over a few years, I'm learning how to let go of things I can't control and embracing rest. I used to toss and turn over work-related issues and worked myself to the bone to try and resolve it after hours. But in the end, I just ended up being burnt out and it showed in my work as well. I learned that taking breaks are not only good, but necessary.

Also, I understand that everyone's job is different and some need extra hours put into it after work and that's okay! These may not all work together for you, but hopefully you'll be able to find the right work/life balance in your life with these suggestions.

I've learned my lesson and figured out a few ways to save myself from the stress next year. With a few simple suggestions, you can turn it around and get ahead of it all next time!

Look Festive and Chic In Sweats
(YES, I Said Sweats!)

Image via

My family doesn't get really dressed up for Christmas, so I like to make sure I'm comfortable, but still somewhat put together so I can jokingly say "I woke up like this."

I saw this sweatshirt a couple weeks ago at J. Crew and I knew it was an insta-buy. I love it because I'm literally wearing a sweatshirt (a sweatshirt!), but the lace detailing makes it kinda fancy. What's not to love? Unfortunately, it's now sold out (sad face), but I've rounded up a few others that I think would be perfect to wear to Christmas dinner. Comfy without sacrificing style – and plenty of room for that post-dinner food baby.

'Tis The Reason
(And an Advent Playlist, Have a Listen!)

Image via

Happy Friday, friends! I hope you’ve enjoyed my gift guide series these past couple weeks and I hope it’s sparked some ideas on what to get a few people in your life.

But real talk for a minute. I’ve got to admit – my head was so buried in preparing this series, that I quickly lost sight of what the Christmas season really means to me. But by God's grace, I was humbly reminded by family, friends, and many others what this season is truly about. (PTL for community!)

It’s more than the excitement of the first snow, twinkly lights, perfectly wrapped presents under the tree, and the return of holiday drinks (in plain red cups). Don't get me wrong, I love seeing all the lights, Christmas shopping in my PJs (Ebates, anyone?) with a gingerbread latte in hand. But most days, my joy has become dictated by Pinterest-perfect decorations and Instagram-able moments instead of capturing the beauty of what this season really represents.

Making A List, Checking It Twice

Image via

Mark your calendars for my holiday gift guide series, starting on Monday. Cue the confetti! Gift guide posts are some of my favorites to read and these were definitely one of my favorites to put together. I can't wait to share these with you!

Until then, I'm going to slip into some elastic waistband pants and throw on a baggy sweater to hide the inevitable food baby that is to come.

Wherever you are and whatever you're doing, I hope you can ditch your computer screen (and your phone too!) for some quality face time with friends and family. Unwind, eat, [eat, eat,] and share lots of laughs with the people you love most. And make some time for you to try something new.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Centerpieces to Suit Every Style

Image via
When I host any type of get together, my favorite way to brighten up the space and add a touch of personality is with floral arrangements. And if you're a guest, they're a really thoughtful gift to give to the host!

Centerpieces completely set the scene and the possibilities are truly endless. Your personal style can be reflected from the flowers themselves to the vase that's being used. So no matter what type of Thanksgiving gathering you're hosting or attending, here are 4 different arrangements that will elevate your table setting and suit many styles.

5 Simple (And Reusable) Friendsgiving DIY Ideas

Image via
My friends and I are thinking of having a friendsgiving dinner next week since a few of us aren't going to visit family this year. And I am one who's always up for hosting parties and a good DIY sesh, except for when all of your beautiful decorations get thrown out or when they can't be repurposed for later. So, I've wrangled up a few of my favorite DIY ideas from around the interwebs that you can easily make and reuse even after friendsgiving!

Friday Finds: No. 7

I thought about what I wanted to share with you in this week's installment of Friday Finds and decided that I wanted to start taking a slightly different approach.

I don't know if it's because Thanksgiving is approaching, but I want to spend less time complaining and more time being grateful (even about the little things). Which is why I want to shift gears a bit and use Friday Finds to share a few glimpses into my week – anything that sparked a bit of happiness, no matter how small they are.

But of course, if I see something worth mentioning or that'll give you a good laugh, I'll definitely share (like this). :)

5 Things I Want To Make More Time For

Image via

These days, it's crazy to think about how much time we pour into social media, how many hours we spend staring at multiple screens, and how little face time we actually get with the people in our lives. (Or at least this is true for myself.)

And then I saw this video that Estée posted, where she documented a 48 hour digital detox.
48 HOURS. Sadly, I don't even know if I could successfully go 24 hours without looking at my phone, watching TV, or going online. But then, she posted this other video about 5 things she wanted to make more time for and it got me thinking about all the things I keep saying I want to do, but "don't have time for" too.

Friday Finds: No. 6

Oh, hey there. And happy Friday! Can you believe it's already the end of October? Seriously, shut the front door. I can't believe how quickly time is flying by. I feel like I'm constantly saying that nowadays, but it's true. It even snowed here on Wednesday! Not cool, Minne. Not. Cool.

Well, because it's getting colder out, apparently all I can think about it comfort food and warm drinks. Hence the food edition of my (somewhat) weekly Friday Finds post. So let's dive in.

All The Feels

Image via

Some days I can't believe this blog is even real. Seriously, pinch me! Because I'm a new kid on this block, I've been really encouraged by others who are starting this journey too, hoping to inspire others and spark creativity. And I'm so surprised and honored to have been nominated for
The Versatile Blogger Award by Krissy of All The Details. We've recently been chatting back and forth and I absolutely love her blog style and aesthetic. #seriouslyonpoint

It's honestly been so encouraging to start making connections in the blogger community, so a huge thank you for nominating me!

Now here are the rules.

THANK the person who nominated you. (Done. Seriously, I'm still in shock!)
INCLUDE a link to their blog. (See above and go give her some love.)
SHARE seven facts about yourself.
TAG 15 bloggers you've recently discovered or follow on regular basis.

Now you can get to know me a little better.

ONE / I hate wearing socks. (Yes, I know live in Minnesnowta) But I really do. They make me feel restricted for some reason, so it's the best feeling in the world when I can take them off. Freedom!

TWO / Studying abroad in Spain sparked my love of eggs. The yoke used to put me off, but my host mother served eggs, over-easy with rice regularly and they eventually grew on me. This simple meal brings back so much nostalgia.

THREE / Speaking of travel... one day I want to hike to Machu Picchu in Peru. I may not survive the hike (especially after watching this episode of An Idiot Abroad), but it is one of my dreams to make it there one day.

FOUR / How I Met Your Mother is one of my favorite shows ever, but I only re-watch Seasons 1-6 and then start all over again. The last few seasons and the series finale still upsets me, so I just don't watch them. (Fun fact in addition to this fun fact: it's playing in the background right now!)

FIVE / My perfect Saturday would be getting brunch at a local restaurant and exploring new parts of that neighborhood. I grew up in Minnesota for most of my life and I'm still discovering new parts of Minneapolis to this day.

SIX / I absolutely love stargazing. And my favorite place of all time to see the stars is on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The first time I saw a shooting star was when I was there on a missions trip. I love being in awe of His beautiful, intricate creation.

SEVEN / If I were given a choice between savory and sweet, I will almost always choose savory. Keyword being almost. :)

Now it's time to give a shoutout to some wonderful people and their lovely blogs.

The Stress-Free Way to Downsizing Your Closet

I shared a while back that after the move, I was going to try a capsule wardrobe. I've been in love with Caroline's blog, Unfancy, since she introduced the blogosphere to this amazing concept. If you haven't seen her blog, you need to stop what you're doing and go check it out now. And come back and finish reading this post, por favor. :)

I'd actually been re-evaluating my closet every few months and purging the things that didn't fit my style or I wasn't getting as much wear out of already. So this time around, there wasn't much to get rid of. But if you're a borderline hoarder like I am or are feeling a bit uninspired and want a fresh start, these are some of my tips that I adapted from reading Caroline's blog in downsizing my closet. I'll be sharing my capsule wardrobe in another post, hopefully soon!

Room Inspo: My Dream Bedroom

Well, the roomie and I finally moved! I'm happy to say this place is slowly starting to feel like home.

There are definitely things I already miss about the old place… the neighborhood, the square footage, and endless storage options (I miss this the most... wahhh). But I am excited to be working with a blank canvas and taking on the challenge of making the most of a smaller apartment.

My new room is bigger than my old room, so I did have some space to work with. It's almost coming together, but it's just missing a few finishing touches. So I wrangled up a list of a few things that I think would complete the vision I had for my new bedroom.

New Discoveries

Image via
Hi friends, sorry for being MIA! Last weekend I was in Chicago for my friends' wedding, which was so beautiful and amazing. It was also my first time being a wedding coordinator! It was actually not as stressful as I thought it would be and I hope everyone else thought it went smoothly. Cheers to the happy couple!

But the biggest thing is that I'm moving in a little over a week! I can't believe it's almost here and I'm so excited to have a clean slate to redecorate my space. So please bear with me as I'm getting ready to move and get everything in order before regularly scheduled posts are happening again. (Thanks to the handful of you who have been asking about upcoming blog posts! You're so kind.)

But I couldn't just leave you with nothing, so here are a few things I've discovered lately that I've really been enjoying:

What To Do This Labor Day

First of all, I cannot believe that Labor Day weekend is already here! Where is the time going and how can we slow it down? Since it basically snuck up on me, I literally have no plans whatsoever. If you're in the same boat as I am, try one of these ideas this weekend! There's a good mix of things to do if you need a little "me" time or if you wanna hang with your friends and family.

Image via Death to the Stock Photo

I've been reading this book for my book club and am totally hooked, so I plan on finishing that his weekend. And also maybe watching a few more episodes of this new TV show. Who else is watching this right now? So good! I definitely want to try and visit the farmer's market to pick up the last of the summer fruits and veggies. And there are a ton of parks in Minneapolis that host movie nights, which sounds like a fun way to unwind and relax.

Whatever you end up doing, I hope you have a fun and relaxing weekend. Happy Friday!

3 Easy Ways to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Cleaning my makeup brushes is not the most exciting chore, but it's an important one. When left too long, they're filled with loads of bacteria that are obviously not good for your skin. Who wants to buff in foundation with a side of germs? No, thank you.

So today, I want to share with you a few simple ways to clean your brushes and keep them in good condition.

A Quick Guide to San Francisco

I can't believe how fast my trip to San Francisco went by! Thankfully, my trip isn't over just yet. I'm spending a few more days getting some quality R&R with the fam in sunny SoCal before I head back to Minne. I have a little down time, so thought I'd give you a few quick highlights of my trip and recommendations on things to do and where to eat if you're ever in the Bay area. Be warned, it is mostly just a long list of places to eat. But hey, that's all you need, right? :)

Never Pay for a Checked Bag Again

Image via Kimberly Richards
Part of me is kind of sad that this is coming to an end, but I'm really excited to talk about the final part of my travel series. It's been a few months since I've been on vacay, so I can't wait to be in California next week!

Packing for a week-long trip can trigger a serious case of overpacking syndrome. So... let's talk how you can avoid overpacking. After studying abroad for a semester in Europe, I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two and have got this packing thing in the bag. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Here's how you can conquer overpacking with five easy steps:

How to Pack for a Weekend Trip

Because I'm going to be traveling a bit these next few weeks, I decided to create a three-part travel series to share with you throughout the next week or so and today's a look at part one!

My friends always joke that I'm the "mom" of the group because I liked to be prepared for any situation. But before I knew how to streamline my things, it meant that I was packing everything but the kitchen sink. These days, I've learned to pare back while still managing to have all the essentials covered.

Here are my tips and tricks to packing seamlessly for a weekend getaway.

Delicious Overnight Oats

Mornings can sometimes turn into a mad dash to get ready and out the door, which means that there's little to no time to make breakfast. And that's no good for people like me who get hangry real fast. Having breakfast is a must for me and any time I can prep ahead of time, I take advantage of it. I've been loving these overnight oats lately because they're quick, easy, and a refreshing way to start your day.

5 Recipes to Try This Weekend

My favorite part of Fourth of July (or any holiday really) is the food. #omnomnom

I haven't decided what I'm going to make yet, so I dove into my Pinterest archives and found some recipes I've been meaning to try and also rounded up some of my favorite crowd-pleasers for this weekend.

So Fresh & So Clean

"My take on fragrance: it should smell great, never overpower, and make you feel great."
Bobbi Brown

I like to switch up my perfume based on the seasons. So when summer rolls around, I want something that's light and fresh. Be prepared to hear those words a thousand times in the next few sentences. Full-on floral fragrances tend to give me a headache, so I tend to gravitate towards more citrusy, slightly sweet, fresh scents during the warmer months.

Jumping On That Podcast Bandwagon...

I don't know about you, but I kinda feel like podcasts are having a moment right now. Instead of playing that Friends episode for the millionth time on Netflix for some background noise, you can throw on a podcast and listen to something equally, if not more entertaining. All while getting to check things off your to-do list that you never thought you'd get around to. I love a productive multi-tasking sesh. #typeAforlife. But actually, my favorite time to listen to podcasts is when I'm driving. It's perfect for making time go by faster during your morning and evening commute.

Here are a few of my current favorites that have caught my attention and sometimes makes me wish there was more traffic. Crazy, I know.

Swedish Weekend

I've lived in Minnesota for a total of 10+ years and there are still so many places I haven't visited. One of my friends is going to be teaching in Sweden for the next two years and we thought it would be really fun to have a Swedish-filled day since there is so much Scandinavian influence around here.

And what's more Swedish than Ikea! Wink. We made a quick trip and picked up a few things, which mostly ended up contributing to my plant addiction. Plus, stay tuned... I see a few DIY projects coming your way with a few of the things I bought!

Afterwards, we visited the American Swedish Institute and toured the Turnblad Mansion. Neither of us had been, and it did not disappoint. The mansion was absolutely stunning. I love, love, loved all of the beautiful architecture and Swedish furnishings. My favorite room was the kitchen– gorgeous marble and beautiful tiles... the minimalist chic vibes were flowing. I'm telling you, this kitchen was of Pinterest dreams. Swoon. Insert heart-eyed emoji here.

Once we finished exploring, we got a couple of cold press coffees at Fika and just enjoyed the beautiful weather. Oh, and I almost forgot! If you're ever there, you have to try the Swedish almond cake! It was so good that I want to try making it at home. Amazeballs. And yes, I did just say amazeballs.

I had so much fun this weekend exploring a new part of Minneapolis and it makes me love this city even more.

What's your favorite spot in Minneapolis?

Leave a comment below so I can add it to my list of places to see!

Father's Day Gift Guide

Hold the phone, can you believe it's already June?! Which means Father's Day is coming up! And for those of you who were just about to Google it... I've got you, it's June 21st!

I don't know about you, but I feel like dads are some of the hardest people to shop for. And my type-A personality never lets me forget that I need to send gifts out well in advance so I don't repeat my Mother's Day fiasco. I put off my trip to the post office and ended up paying $40 in shipping... yikes!

So I put together a list of a few things that I thought would make great gifts this year that aren't a box of golf balls or a tie (My default "I don't know what to get you" gifts). I'm thinking about getting my dad those Nikes. The BF has these and says it's like walking on clouds.

What are some of your gifts ideas for dad this year?

Let me know and leave a comment below, I'd love to hear!

Who's Joe Fresh?

Have you guys heard of Joe Fresh? Well, if you have, then you're way ahead of the curve! (Or I'm just really behind.) Anyway, it's a Canadian brand that's now available online to ship to the good ol' US of A. To me, they kind of give off a J. Crew/Madewell/H&M/Zara vibe, which I love. And the best part is that everything is actually really affordable!

I ordered a few things a couple weeks ago during their Memorial Day sale and could not be happier. I picked up the striped t-shirt dress in navy, the black space dye active tank, the pink v-neck tee, and the panama hat and I'm in love with everything. I think these are the perfect staples transitioning from spring to summer and I'm definitely going to be picking up a few more pieces later on. (Or this week. That still counts as later.)

Head over to their site and let me know if you pick up a few things for yourself! Happy shopping. (:

To New Beginnings

Oh.em.gee.

Am I really writing my first blog post? Am I ready to share my thoughts with all of you on the worldwide web ("Mom and Dad")?

Nerves aside, I am really excited about finally taking these first steps towards making this so-called pipe dream a reality. Wildly original. Bet you haven't heard that before, huh? (:

To be honest, there are so many ideas and directions I have playing out in my head that I'm a little overwhelmed by it. But ultimately, I have to remind myself that this is something I'm doing for me and something I should enjoy! It's really just a place for me to share what I love and my hope is that you'll find some of this inspiring and useful.

So if you've happened to discover my little corner of the internet on a whim, thanks for taking the time to read this! Or maybe you're just looking at the photos (and that's fine too!)

Cheers to a fresh start and new beginnings.
